Background
Social Development Unit (SDU) was formed in 1984 to promote marriages among graduate singles, while Social Development Services (SDS) was set up in 1985 to promote marriages among non-graduate singles.
The two units were merged on 28 January 2009 to reap economies of scale, enlarge the outreach, and provide more opportunities for singles to meet.
On 16 October 2009, the unit was renamed Social Development Network (SDN). This new name reflects the organisation’s aim to forge an extensive network of singles, resources and partners and to create an environment conducive for singles to meet and forge meaningful relationships.
Vision
The vision of the new SDN is to facilitate marriages and nurture a culture where singles view marriage as a top life goal.
Mission
To establish SDN as a credible, leading agency and one-stop resource centre on relationship skills, social interaction opportunities and information.
Strategic Thrusts
SDN promotes marriage through inculcating a pro-marriage mindset in singles; equipping them with relationship skills and useful information on dating; and creating interaction opportunities for singles.
All resident singles aged 20 and above will enjoy access to the unit’s online communication platform, magazine, and information on events planned by SDN and its partners such as, SDNTrust accredited agencies, workplaces via the Social Development Officers (SDO) Network, community and commercial organisations.
With the SDNTrust Accreditation Framework and the Partner Connection Fund, SDN will continue to develop and professionalise the private dating industry by attracting credible private sector players, growing their business competencies and ensuring the provision of quality dating services.
